Doha, Qatar: The first-ever Shell Eco-marathon in the Middle East has concluded with resounding success at the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar.

The event brought together student teams from around the world to showcase their innovative, energy-efficient vehicles.

The competition was fierce, with teams demonstrating exceptional creativity, engineering skills, and teamwork. After several days of intense competition, the winners were announced in a grand awards ceremony.

The top honours in the Prototype category went to Universitas Negeri Malang (Internal Combustion Engine); Universitas Indonesia (Hydrogen Fuel Cell); and Diponegoro University, all from Indonesia, whose ultra-efficient, lightweight vehicles achieved a record-breaking astonishing distances using minimal fuel.

In Urban Concept Category, the team from Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (Internal Combustion Engine); and Universitas Udayana, also from Indonesia, clinched the first place with their vehicles that closely resembled a passenger car and featured advanced energy-saving technologies.

Rob Maxwell, Managing Director of Shell Companies Qatar, sharing his thoughts on the event’s success, said, “We are thrilled with the outcome of the first-ever Shell Eco-marathon in the Middle East. The level of innovation and collaboration we witnessed was extraordinary. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to all the winners and participants. Your hard work and passion for sustainable engineering are commendable. I also want to thank our partners, Qatar Museums, Qatar Auto Museums, Qatar Airways, Ooredoo and Seashore for their unwavering support in making this event a reality. Together, we have made history.”

Shell Eco-marathon Asia-Pacific and the Middle East not only highlighted the technical prowess of the student teams but also emphasised the importance of sustainability and innovation in addressing future energy challenges.

The event featured workshops, networking opportunities, and technical inspections, providing a comprehensive learning experience for all participants.

At the event, attendees were able to test drive a specially designed Shell Eco-marathon vehicle running on gas-to-liquids (GTL) fuel made in Qatar. Qatar is home to the largest GTL plant globally, where Shell’s advanced GTL technology transforms natural gas, the cleanest-burning fossil fuel, into premium liquid products. These products, which would otherwise be made from crude oil, include transport fuels, motor oils, and ingredients for everyday necessities like plastics, detergents, and cosmetics.

As the event concluded, the spirit of innovation and sustainability continued to resonate, inspiring the next generation of engineers and scientists to pursue groundbreaking solutions for a better future.

Shell’s partners in Qatar for Shell Eco-marathon included Qatar Museums, Qatar Auto Museums, Qatar Airways, Ooredoo and Seashore.
