Qatar weighs setting up intellectual property centre

DOHA: The Department of Intellectual Property Rights Protection at the Ministry of Economy and Commerce is studying, in collaboration with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), a proposal to set up a centre for innovation and technology here.

The proposed centre will provide services to research scholars and inventors regarding intellectual property rights. The centre will categorise and set up an archive for intellectual property rights and prepare an international database. 
The Department issued 164 certificates of copyright and registered 43 violations in this regard. The Department filed 17 cases related to copyright. Some 28 applications were submitted to obtain patent rights. The Department receives requests for registration and protection of intellectual property rights and issues certificates of protection.
Some 730 requests were received for registering local trademarks, while 7,006 requests were received to register foreign trademarks and 8,717 requests for inspection. The Peninsula
