Sarkhosh storms into Doha quarters

Doha: Iran’s Amir Sarkhosh reached the quarter-finals of the Asian Snooker Championship after crushing Nepal’s Ankit Man Shrestha at the Al Messila-luxury collection Resort in Doha, yesterday.  

Top-seeded Sarkhosh, who is in top form in the tournament, maintained his fine run to outwit Shrestha 112-16, 88-0, 70-57, 80-0 after breaks of 55, 88 and 80 in the first, second and fourth frames respectively. 

Meanwhile, Qatari cueists endured a contrasting day yesterday as their campaign in the event ended in the last-16 stage. 

In the exciting knock-out stage, Qatar’s Bashar Abdulmajeed went down 2-4 to Saleh Mohammadi of Afghanistan, who won 30-54, 85-26, 1-69, 90-14, 60-29, 69-5.

Qatar cueist Ahmed Saif’s challenge also came to an end 1-4 against Cheung Ka Wai of Hong Kong. 

Wai had breaks of 76, 64 and 59 in the 1st, 2nd and 5th frames as he prevailed 80-1, 98-19, 23-76, 67-11, 65-57.

Alijalil Ali of Iraq booked his last eight spot with a 4-0 (71-12, 66-44, 75-29, 72-61) over Laxman Rawat of India.

The 23-time world champion Pankaj Advani of India, second seeded in the last-16 was scheduled to play Hong Kong’s Tam Yun Fung, while Qatar’s Ali Al Obaidly was to meet Pakistan’s Haris Tahir.

Pakistan’s Babar Masih has a tie up with Iran’s Siyavosh Mozayani; and UAE’s Habib Sabah plays Bahrain’s Khalid Kamali. 

The Asian Championship will conclude tomorrow.
