New York: The United Nations Secretary-General Bank Ki-moon met here yesterday Qatar’s Attorney General Dr Ali bin Fetais Al Marri, who is also the UN Special Advocate for Stolen Assets Recovery, and his delegation.
During the meeting at the UN Headquarters, the Attorney General briefed the UN chief on his efforts exerted inside and outside the Arab region to recover the stolen funds especially in the Arab Spring countries.
In this context, Al Marri gave Ban Ki-moon a full presentation containing the accomplishments achieved since he was appointed as the UN Special Advocate for Stolen Assets Recovery, and briefed the UN chief on the obstacles which impeded his mission in several countries.
The two sides also discussed the future of the international action for recovering the stolen assets and efforts that could be exerted on part of the UN and its specialised and regional organs to support the Arab states whose funds were looted and smuggled into other countries.
Earlier on Friday, Dr Al Marri, met at the United Nations Headquarters a number of UN officials working in the field of the rule of law, fight against corruption and recovery of stolen funds.
Dr Al Marri met Assistant Administrator and Director, Bureau for Crisis Prevention and Recovery, UNDP Jordan Ryan, Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Arab States at the United Nations Development Programme Sima Bahouth and Assistant Administrator and Director of the Regional Bureau for Africa at the United Nations Development Programme Abdoulaye Mar Dieye.
He discussed the prospects of cooperation between the United Nations and the International Centre for Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption in Doha and the prospects for future work in the field of recovery of looted money and mustering of support through the global organisation to the Arab Spring countries
Dr Al Marri also discussed future projects that can be carried out by the UN in the region in the areas of rule of law and fighting corruption.
