Katara to showcase EU linguistic diversity

Doha: Cultural Village Foundation, Katara will launch the European Language Activities tomorrow (Tuesday) in collaboration between Katara’s Public Diplomacy Center (KPDC) and embassies of  the European Union, Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal  and Sweden. The activities run through June 20. 

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, General Manager of Katara and President of Global Public Diplomacy Network (GPDNet), Prof Dr. Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti hailed the activities as one of the fruits of coordination and cooperation between Katara, represented by KPDC and the embassies of the EU and five European countries in  Qatar, in a bid to open important cultural and civilizational windows to introduce Europe’s renowned cultural and linguistic diversity. 

The activities will last for five consecutive weeks, with each country being allocated a week to display its activities that include practical workshops and theoretical lectures on European languages, Al Sulaiti said. Katara aims through these events to emphasise the importance of languages as a bridge for communication and rapprochement among cultures; while being a meeting place for the world’s cultures. Katara is also a meeting place for the languages of this world, Al Sulaiti told the conference.  CEO of KPDC and GDPNet Secretary-General Maryam Al Saad said Katara activities embody close cooperation between Katara’s KPDC and the embassies of the EU, Spain, Greece, Italy, Portugal and Sweden.

She said the event shows strong cultural ties between Qatar and Europe; and provides a unique experience, through multilingual activities as the main component in Europe’s rich cultural heritage. 

Ambassadors of the EU and the five participating European countries expressed their happiness in cooperating with KPDC to launch a variety of cultural and linguistic activities, and allow the Katara audience to learn about European history and cultures, the aesthetics of European languages and their creative influences. They also stressed the importance of European language activities in strengthening the bonds of friendship and communication between Qatari culture and the cultures of European countries, in addition to its role in promoting mutual understanding. 

The participants of the conference included Ambassador of the EU H E Cristian Tudor, Ambassador of Italy H E Paolo Toschi, Ambassador of the Hellenic Republic H E Eleni Michalopoulou, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Spain H E Javier Carbagosa Sanchez, Ambassador of Sweden H E Gautam S Bhattacharyya, and Ambassador of the Portuguese Republic H E Paulo Neves Pocinho.
