Doha: Experts from Qatar University-Health (QU-H) and Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) have collaborated to design and deliver a comprehensive Continuing Professional Development (CPD) research series aimed at enhancing the confidence and competence of healthcare professionals in conducting research.

The second of the six-part interactive webinar series welcomed Qatar and international participants to discuss the skills required to search and interpret the published literature. This essential component of conducting research helps healthcare professionals identify relevantly and the most recent published evidence that applies to their practice in delivering care.

QU-H CPD coordinator Dr. Zachariah Nazar, commented, “Healthcare professionals are required to keep their skills and knowledge up to date with the latest and best evidence to support their patients. This interactive session provided participants with practical examples of how this skill can be applied to very relevant areas of practice, for example, emerging evidence published around COVID-19.”

Amongst other topics, the session briefed participants on potential sources of bias in published research, the process of performing a full literature review, and how the literature can be searched to help in answering practice-related questions.

The session was led by Dr. Daoud Al Badriyeh, Associate Professor at the College of Pharmacy, QU-Health.

Dr. Al Badriyeh said, “It is a critical time for healthcare professionals to develop their research skills. There is research that is published that may be biased and contain inaccurate conclusions, and therefore it is important they can recognize this and not be misled.”  “I felt that this session met the learning objectives and was very pleased with the high level of interaction with the participants,” he added.

Prof. Dr. Marcus Lance, Head of Research, Department of Anesthesiology at HMC, and Ms. Myriam ElJaam, Teaching Assistant at the College of Pharmacy, QU-Health, also presented in this session.

Prof. Dr. Lance recognised the enthusiasm of the participants and commended QU-Health and HMC for leading this initiative.

Participants from all healthcare sectors in Qatar joined the live interactive webinar, which was streamed live on YouTube to an international audience for free. This CPD series was co-designed by QU-Health and HMC following strategic meetings to discuss the learning and training needs of healthcare professionals in Qatar. Further CPD series have been planned in the coming months, which will see further collaboration between the two institutions to implement their shared commitment to supporting the optimization of healthcare provision in Qatar and beyond.
