Doha: The United Arab Emirates Ministry of Defense announced that two national oil tankers were struck by Iranian cruise missiles while transiting the southern shipping lane of the Strait of Hormuz within Omani territorial waters, killing one Indian crew member and injuring eight others.
In a statement, the ministry said the tankers Mombasa and Al Bahiyah were targeted in the attack.
The incident resulted in the death of one Indian crew member aboard the Mombasa and left eight others injured, including four who sustained serious injuries.
The injured include six Indian nationals and two Ukrainian nationals, according to the ministry.
The ministry said the attack also caused material damage to both tankers after fires broke out on board. The fires have since been brought under control.
The UAE Ministry of Defense condemned what it described as "this blatant attack," calling it a serious violation and a clear breach of international law that threatens the security and stability of the region.
It added that the UAE "reserves its full right to respond to this escalation and to take all necessary measures to protect its territory, its citizens and residents, in a manner that safeguards its sovereignty, security, and stability, and protects its national interests."
The ministry said the armed forces remain at the highest level of readiness and preparedness to address any threats and are taking all necessary measures to respond decisively to any attempt to undermine the country's security and stability.
It also urged the public to rely on official sources for information and refrain from circulating rumors or unverified reports.
