Two Qatari students have won the Best Research Project prize in the field of Chemistry and Materials Science in the research competition affiliated with the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF 2017) held recently in Los Angeles, USA.
Qatari students Thajia Mohammed Al Hail and Sharifa Ahmed Al Muhannadi took part in the competition with research on the manufacture of biodegradable plastics using soy husks.
The students are members of Al-Bairaq project of Qatar University and are studying at Al-Khor Secondary School for Girls. They undertook the research under the supervision of researchers and specialised professors at the university.
Commenting on the occasion, Head of Al-Bairaq Project and Director of Foreign Affairs at the Advanced Materials Center at Qatar University Dr  Noura Al Thani said that the sucess of Al-Bairaq at the global level is a proof of the quality of educational material offered by the project in its three tracks for secondary schools in Qatar.
She added that this success reflects the project's role in supporting the country's efforts in creating a knowledge-based society.
The two students had stood first in the chemistry and materials science category in the scientific research competition organised by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in cooperation with the Qatar National Research Fund.
The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), a programme of Society for Science and the Public (the Society), is the world's largest international pre-college science competition. Each year, approximately 1,800 high school students from more than 75 countries, regions, and territories are awarded the opportunity to showcase their independent research and compete for on average $4m in prizes.
