Sabar — a local fruit, commonly known as Jangal Jalebi.

DOHA: Sabar — a local fruit which is commonly known as Jangal Jalebi in most Asian communities — is now being sold at the Al Mazrouha farmers’ market.
The winter farmers’ markets are still operating from Thursday to Saturday and are expected to close for this season by the end of this month.
Sabar began coming to local markets including central market and farmers’ markets in the beginning of this month and production is expected to continue until the end of this month. A 3kg box of this fruit was available at QR20 at Al Mazrouha yesterday.

“We have at least 10 trees of jangal jalebi in our farm. We harvest some 10 cartons per day”, said Mohammad Iqbal, a salesman at an outlet which belongs to a local farm participating at Al Mazrouha.
Sabar (Pithecellobium dulce) is a species of flowering plant in the pea family, Fabaceae, that is native to the Pacific Coast and adjacent highlands of Mexico, Central America, and northern South America. It grows extensively in the Caribbean, Florida, Guam, India, Bangladesh and the Philippines. “Al Mazrouha market will remain open during weekends in the next two weeks. We were told by the authority that May 28 will be last day for this season,” said Iqbal.
“We are still offering varieties of vegetables such as cucumber, sweet melon, pumpkin, cauliflower and spinach this week. There is a pretty good demand we sold some 150 boxes of vegetables in a day,” he said.
Prices of vegetables here are lower compared to those available in other local markets like shopping malls and groceries, he added.
An 8kg box of cucumber was sold at QR22 in Al Mazrouah yesterday. Sweet melon was available at QR30 for a box of same quantity while a 5kg box of pumpkin was sold at QR15. The price of cauliflower was QR12 per 8kg box while seven bundles of spinach were sold at QR8.
