The Ministry of Municipality and Environment has allocated seven sites for permanent residential labour camps in different areas of the country. With a total area of 6,545,157 sqm, the sites can accommodate up to 197,000 workers.

The Department of Urban Planning at the Ministry said yesterday that it has also allocated 13 sites for construction of temporary residential camps for labourers with total area of 3,692,954 sqm and capacity of 211,000 workers (single beds) or 390,000 (double beds).

These camps have not been developed yet, said the Ministry in its 2016 achievements report released yesterday.

In 2010, the Ministry issued the law banning labour accommodation in families' residential areas. The law specified 43 areas in Doha and 20 in other municipalities where labour camps are not allowed.

The law defined labour camp as a single workers accommodation having more than three persons and many labour accommodations in different municipalities were evicted by the Ministry’s inspectors since enforcement of the law in November 2011.

The Ministry has set up specifications for developing permanent and temporary labour camps for which a policy is being implemented by all municipalities, according to the Ministry’s statement.

In the report, the Ministry said that it has allocated 37 land plots for training stadiums in relation to 2022 FIFA World Cup, with eight plots for the main stadiums and "currently it is working to identify land plot for the ninth stadium".

Bus station sites to be set up for World Cup

The Ministry said it will set up sites for bus stations, gathering points and fan villages for World Cup 2022 in parts of the country. As part of its achievements in 2016, the Ministry highlighted that the Urban Planning Department has accomplished the first phase of the Metro project for which the Ministry has allocated 38 locations for metro stations and relevant facilities.

For phase two of the metro project, the Ministry has also allocated 66 stations, in addition to areas for the long distance trains including section A and Section C1. All these were fully delivered. In regard to economic and Logistic industry areas, the Ministry said it has approved the initial general plan and currently is studying the final general plan of Ras BuFontas area. Land plots were allocated for a total of seven economic and logistic projects including Al Karaana, Um Al Hol, four locations for Manatiq Company and 13 temporary logistic locations for the Public Works Authority-Ashghal. All these projects were completed by 92 percent.

Work on fourth phase of Furjan Markets were approved by the Ministry and currently working on the fifth phase of the project which includes allocation of land plots in the villages and outside areas. The study related to this phase has been accomplished by 80 percent, said the Ministry.
