Doha: The Science Council of the University of Rome Tor Vergata yesterday decided to award H E Dr. Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari, Cultural Adviser at the Emiri Diwan and Qatar’s nominee for the Unesco’s Director-General post, an honorary doctorate degree in the field of culture.
The Department of Philosophy, Literature and Art will award the degree in December. The decision came after the university adopted a programme which honours people for their role in establishing peace and promoting understanding between different cultures.
The university said Dr. Al Kawari’s profile since working in Paris, then the US and in his capacity as Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, was the perfect representative of the Qatari culture.
It praised the former Minister’s work as respectful of other cultures and religions and highlighted in particular the ministry’s role in translating Arab literature into multiple languages international works into Arabic. Dr. Al Kawari will address the honouring ceremony to highlight the role of culture in international relations and present his programme as Unesco director-general to the cultural committee of the Italian parliament.
