DOHA: Qatar Fuel (Woqod) is installing systems at all its petrol stations to help prevent tampering of fuel pumps by personnel.
The anti-tampering devices will help the company closely monitor the metering systems at its petrol stations across the country.
This was disclosed by the CEO of Woqod, Ibrahim Jaham Al Kuwari, replying to questions by reporters yesterday after opening a petrol station in Al Jameeliya, which is some 70 kilometres from Doha.
Al Kuwari said the pricing of the company was uniform throughout so there was no question of different petrol stations charging different rates for fuel.
Al Jameeliya’s was the 25th petrol station opened by Woqod, which plans to add another 10 to the existing network of 25 by the end of this year.
Asked about allegations of tampering with fuel pumps by its staffers at some petrol pumps, Al Kuwari said anti-tampering devices being installed at all Woqod petrol stations within this year will ensure that no price or fuel quantity manipulations will be possible.
The new petrol station inaugurated yesterday has a big area and has at least nine retail shops to be rented out besides having Sidra stores, a transparent (Shafaf) LPG cylinder outlet and ATMs.
Al Kuwari said that work on 10 more petrol stations was on and they were expected to be ready for commissioning
by year-end.
“We are committed to providing petrol stations in the nook and corner of the country, including in remote areas.”
Some stations even have technical inspection facilities for vehicles.
According to the CEO, the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning is actively cooperating with Woqod and has allotted at least 15 plots of land in different areas of Doha to set up petrol stations.
The design work in respect of all these planned stations is on and soon the tendering process will begin, said the CEO.
Responding to a question, Al Kuwari said that on average a petrol station costs about QR18m ($4.94m) to QR20m ($5.5m).
“By now we have opened 25 petrol stations. This means that we have spent a total of around QR500m ($137.3m) on our petrol stations project so far,” the Woqod CEO said.
