Doha, Qatar: Qatar’s passport has climbed to 45th place in the latest Henley Passport Index, underscoring the country’s growing diplomatic influence and enhanced global mobility for its citizens.

According to the latest official ranking published on its website, Qatari passport holders can now access 111 destinations visa-free or with a visa-on-arrival, placing the country ahead of several European and Asian nations.

The improvement marks a two-place jump from its 47th position in the January 2026 update, where it also held a score of 111 destinations.

This latest ascent continues a steady upward trend for Qatar. Just over a year ago, in January 2025, the passport stood at 47th after a six-spot gain from 53rd the previous year, when access stood at 108 destinations. In the broader historical context, Qatar has advanced more than 20 places since the early 2020s, reflecting sustained progress in international agreements.

The Henley Passport Index, the original and most authoritative ranking of 199 passports, relies on exclusive data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA). It measures the number of countries and territories accessible without a prior visa. While top spots remain dominated by Asian and European powers, Singapore leads with access to 192 destinations, Qatar’s rise highlights the shifting dynamics in global mobility, particularly for smaller, strategically positioned nations in the Middle East.

Economically, the jump bolsters Qatar National Vision 2030 goals by enhancing connectivity. Stronger passport power supports tourism recovery, foreign investment inflows, and talent attraction.

Expatriates and investors view Qatar more favourably when relocation or frequent travel becomes simpler.

Diplomatically, the gains stem from proactive visa liberalisation pacts and robust bilateral ties, positioning Qatar as a bridge between East and West.

Regionally, Qatar maintains its edge as the second-strongest passport among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, trailing only the UAE. Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain follow further behind. This intra-GCC hierarchy reinforces Qatar’s soft power and competitive standing in the Arabian Peninsula.

Experts note that such improvements rarely happen in isolation. They signal effective foreign policy, economic stability, and a reputation for reliability, qualities that encourage more countries to ease entry for Qatari nationals.

As global travel rebounds post-pandemic and geopolitical landscapes evolve, Qatar’s passport strength offers a competitive advantage in an increasingly interconnected world. The Henley Index updates monthly, and analysts expect further gains if Qatar continues forging new agreements. This leap is not merely symbolic; it embodies progress, empowerment, and a brighter horizon for global engagement. Qatari travellers can now explore more of the world with confidence, carrying a passport that is increasingly respected on the international stage.
