MANILA: A Filipino due to be executed in Saudi Arabia this week has been given three months to raise $1 million in “blood money” to save his life, officials said here yesterday.
Labourer Joselito Zapanta has been sentenced to death by beheading for the 2009 murder of his Sudanese landlord. The reprieve follows an appeal by President Benigno Aquino.
Saudi authorities announced the extension of time given to  Zapanta to pay the widow of his victim 4m riyals ($1.06m) in exchange for his life. The woman is demanding the equivalent of 43m pesos, but Zapanta’s family had raised about 10m pesos, officials said.                    Agencies
