Doha, Qatar: Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has inaugurated a 920-m2 one-story dialysis centre at Ibn Khaldoun Hospital in Al-Hawtah, Lahej Governorate, Yemen.
Being the governorate’s first specialised dialysis facility, the centre was constructed and highly equipped at a total cost of $1,366,573.
Its 12 units offer dialysis services and medical consultations for patients with kidney failure in Lahj and neighbouring districts.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Minister of Public Health and Population, Dr. Qasim Mohamed Bahibah; Governor of Lahej, Murad Al-Halimi and local government and health leaders.
During the inauguration ceremony, Dr. Bahibah appreciated QRCS’s support to the country’s health sector: “This is a major infrastructure asset that would provide high-quality services for patients with kidney failure, alleviate their suffering, and save them the need to travel to other governorates for medical care”.
Al-Halimi praised the humanitarian and developmental role played by QRCS in backing health and services projects.
“Today, we are reaping the fruits of an effective humanitarian partnership that helped upgrade the governorate’s health services,” he added. “I greatly value QRCS’s contribution to such a vital project, which serves many patients”.
Director of Public Health and Population – Lahej Office, Dr. Khaled Gaber described the centre as a “quantum leap in the governorate’s specialised health care services”, noting that it would give the beneficiaries easier and regular access to dialysis services.
He also commended QRCS’s efforts to bring the centre into existence, emphasizing the importance of humanitarian partnerships in strengthening and improving health care services for the most vulnerable groups.
According to previous statements by Eng. Ahmed Hassan Al-Sharaji, head of QRCS’s office in Yemen, to sustain the treatment services provided, the centre will be supplied with medications, medical consumables, dialysis solutions, and staff remunerations for 12 months.
As part of QRCS’s ongoing work to change the difficult reality of patients with kidney failure in Yemen, a medium-term plan is in place to provide dialysis medications, consumables, and machines for 350 patients with kidney failure
