World Beach Games: Hosts Qatar face Croatia in handball opener

Hosts Qatar will begin their campaign in the inaugural Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) World Beach Games with men’s handball matches at Al Gharafa today.

In today’s action, the hosts, who are fielding 27 athletes including two females at the six-day event, will open with a match against Croatia in the morning session and will meet Hungary in the evening session.

Qatar are placed in Group B along with Spain, Hungary, Croatia and Tunisia.

Group A consists of European giants Sweden and Denmark, and also includes USA, Australia and Brazil.

Qatar will compete in seven sports from today till October 16 – 3x3 basketball, beach volleyball, beach handball, karate kata, beach wrestling, open water swimming and aquathlon.

“Team Qatar has begun intensive preparations ahead of the inaugural edition of the ANOC World Beach Games Qatar 2019,” the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) said.

“Most of the athletes are already in training camps and the national sports federations have developed detailed training programmes to prepare their athletes for the competition and ensure a very successful outing,” he said.

Meanwhile the beach soccer preliminary rounds for men and women begin at Katara Beach today.

Brazil which has sent the biggest delegations to the Games will begin their campaign in both the sections.

The South Americans have 77 athletes at the games, followed by 69 players from USA, 62 from Spain and 55 from Russia.

Athletes from 97 countries are taking part in the Games, which are held in four different locations in Qatar.
