DOHA: Some 22 Indian fishermen from Bahrain who ventured into the Qatari waters recently have been taken into custody by the authorities.

They are being detained at Al Khor police station and questioning is on. The fishermen are all from Kanyakumari district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The Indian embassy in Doha yesterday dispatched two officials to Al Khor police station who met the fishermen. “They are in good health and fine,” Anil Nautiyal, second secretary at the embassy in-charge of labor and community welfare, who was one of the two said officials, told this newspaper.

The embassy is constantly in touch with the Qatari authorities concerned and keeping a close track on the situation. “We met the fishermen and assured them of all possible help,” Nautiyal added. The embassy has informed the families of the fishermen in India. “As soon as we got the information about the arrest we contacted the Qatari authorities,” the second secretary said.

Informed sources claim that fishermen from Bahrain occasionally venture into Qatari waters deliberately as the waters offer more catch. The Peninsula
