Flags fly at half-mast near the entrance of the Santander’s offices in Boadilla del Monte outside Madrid yesterday. Emilio Botin, one of Spain’s most powerful men who transformed Santander from a small domestic lender into the eurozone’s biggest bank, has died of a heart attack, aged 79. The bank quickly appointed Ana Botin as its new head.
