DOHA: A criminal court has sentenced an Arab expatriate internal design engineer to three years in jail and fined him QR10,000 ($2,746) for demanding and accepting a bribe of QR20,000 from a carpentry for awarding it some work at Katara Cultural Village where he was employed.
A tip-off was given to the police about the engineer putting a demand for a ‘gift’ for awarding some work to a carpentry at Katara. The police sought formal approval from the Public Prosecution to investigate the matter and if found to be true, use audio and video devices to capture the bribe-giving and taking.
The engineer was caught red-handed and questioned and the matter was referred to court with the audios and videos as evidence.
Taking a serious view of the crime, the court sentenced him to three years in prison and fined him and ruled that he be deported after serving the jail sentence.
