KARACHI: The financial hub of the country is facing another crisis as the water shortage had intensified in the city.
Water was in scarce supply in the majority of the city and now it is near impossible to find. Despite the mounting shortage, load shedding still continues on water pumping stations in the city.
The city’s water mafia is taking maximum advantage of the shortage. According to an estimate, a 1,000 gallon tanker of water is being sold at Rs3,500 which is more than double the set price.
MD Water Board Hashim Raza Zaidi said the shortage would come to an end once the Hub Dam was filled with water. He added that the city would receive an additional 207 million gallons of water once the K-4 project was completed in 2017.
Sindh Assembly Speaker Aga Siraj Durrani said that no excuse from the Water Board or K-Electric would be tolerated. He added that action would be taken against those officials from the Water Board who are responsible for the shortage.
The opposition leader in the provincial assembly Khawaja Izhar-ul-Hasan said monitoring teams on district levels were being informed to address the water shortage in the city.
