DOHA:  Asian champions Qatar will play global heavyweights Brazil in an international friendly at the prestigious Maracana Stadium on June 5, Qatar Football Association (QFA) said yesterday.

The match will allow Qatar match practice ahead of this year’s Copa America in which Qatar is one of the participating teams.

QFA President Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Thani yesterday travelled to Rio de Janeiro to congratulate the newly elected Brazil Football Association (CBF) President Rogerio Caboclo at the CBF Headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.

The QFA President handed over a Qatari football jersey and a memento to his counterpart during the meeting.

The FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, also joined the occasion as the date for the friendly encounter between the global and Asian giants was confirmed.

The friendly match will take place, at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro, which can accommodate nearly 80,000 thousand spectators.

The same venue will also host the final of the Copa America.

The match is an ideal opportunity for Al Annabi to get match practice before it commences its participation in the Copa America, which will be hosted by Brazil from June 14 to July 7, 2019.

Qatar will play against Argentina, Colombia and Paraguay in one of the two groups of 2019 Copa America.

Copa America is the oldest international continental football competition.

The competition determines the continental champion of South America. Since the 1990s, teams from North America and Asia have also been invited to participate.
