Romanian Folklore Night, featuring the Romanian folk ensemble Junii Sibiului, performing at Katara Drama Theatre on Friday.
The Cultural Village Foundation-Katara in collaboration with the Romanian Embassy hosted Romanian Folklore Night featuring the Romanian folk ensemble Junii Sibiului.
Held at Katara Drama Theatre on Friday, the event was attended by Katara General Manager Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, Romania’s Ambassador to Qatar Cristian Tudor, and other representatives of diplomatic missions.
The Romanian performers “Junii Sibiului” began the night with traditional performances from two beautiful and rich regions of Sibiu country: M?rginimea Sibiului and Tarnave Valley. The ensemble also enthralled the audience with a number of folkloric items that reflect the traditions of different cities in Romania, such as Maramure?, Tanjaua, Câmpia, Bihor, Oltenia, Moldavia, Bistri?a, Muntenia, Banat, Transylvania, and Hârtibaciu.
The ensemble dazzled Katara’s theatre with customs that symbolise aspects of life such as birth, wedding, sewing, health, prosperity, and traditional seasonal wear.
Following the traditional dances is the interpretation of songs from Transylvania by soloist singer Ovidiu Homorodean who captivated the audience with the rich repertoire of traditional music using authentic technique.
Junii Sibiului was established in 1994 by the choreographer Ioan Macrea. The group first evolved from a male group to a mixed ensemble. The repertoire of the ensemble consists of dances from the most representative traditional areas of the northern and southern part of Romania.
“I’m delighted and thrilled to put in place such a great show in the context of celebrating this year’s nation of Romania in Qatar. In a few weeks we will together say farewell to 2016, and this is a great opportunity for me to express my gratitude to the Romanian community for their hard work and dedication towards the positive improvement in economic and cultural relations between Romania and the State of Qatar,” said Ambassador Tudor.
The Romanian envoy thanked Katara for its strong support and active cooperation provided to host the event.
