DOHA: The unveiling of the biggest Qatari flag vying for a place in the Guinness Book of Records is one of the highlights of National Day events lined up in Katara Cultural Village.
A ceremony to welcome the traditional dhow Fath Al Khair after its almost one-month journey throughout the GCC is another major activity, Katara General Manager, Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, told a recent press conference.
The dhow carrying 44 crew is expected to anchor on the Katara shores in the morning of National Day.
Other activities, which will start from 3.30pm, include a parade of the musical band of Emiri Guards and horses’ parade with horsemen in national attire, said Abdulrahman Al Tamimi, head of Katara National Day activities organising committee.
The Lekhwiya personnel will feature in a parachute show forming the national flag, from 2pm to 5pm. The public will also get chance to ride in the choppers with air divers and take pictures of horse riders.
Visitors can sign the seven-metre book of loyalty, from 3pm to 5pm for two days.
There will be a Zainha competition by Arkan Company for one day which will see talented five-star hotel and Katara restaurant chefs bake cakes in the form of Qatari monuments and landmarks.
Qatar Petrochemical Company (Qapco) will hold traditional games for two days.
Al Gannas association will organise Al Qalail Championship and set up tent on the Katara Beach which will be open to the public for two days from 9am to 1pm and 4pm to 10pm.
The Childhood Cultural Centre will set up a traditional tent which will offer two-day programmes and competitions on the history of Qatar.
A vintage car expo will be held from 8am to 1pm and 4pm to 10pm. Another event is foam sculpture in different designs to be held for two days.
For two days, gifts will be distributed starting at 7pm in Katara, in collaboration with entities, including Commercial Bank, Emiri Guards, Qapco and the Childhood Cultural Centre.
On National Day, a book on the founder of Qatar, Sheikh Jassim Al Thani, and Rashid Majid’s National Day song will be launched. LED balloons in the colours of the national flag will also be launched during the day.
