Former Liverpool striker Aboubacar Sidiki ‘Titi’ Camara speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the Doha Goals in Doha yesterday.
Doha: Qatar is capable of delivering a ‘perfect World Cup’ and no one should have doubts about its abilities, says former Liverpool striker Aboubacar Sidiki ‘Titi’ Camara.
The former Guinea sports minister who is in Qatar to attend the Doha Goals said: “Qatar has got amazing infrastructure facilities for sports. The Aspire Dome is one of the structures which stands out, and is an example of the progress Qatar has achieved in the short period of time in building sports facilities. I am sure with the passage of time till the 2022 World Cup many other facilities will be added,” said Camara who played one season in the Qatar League.
“From the organisation point of view I am sure with the experience I have of having played in this region, both in Qatar and in Saudi Arabia, they (Qatar) will leave no stone unturned to give the best of the facilities for fans, officials and players,” said the Guinea striker who scored 23 goals in 38 appearances for the national team.
He said fans will have a good time in Qatar but their celebrations will have to abide by the local laws and traditions.
“The fans will get a chance to enjoy in Qatar but they will have to follow the rules and traditions of the region and not antagonize the locals by their behaviour. In this part of the world the way you dress is important, the fans will have to be on the guard against exposing too much skin,” said Camara.
On the World Cup winning chances for the five African teams who will compete in Brazil at the 2014 World Cup Camara said it will be ‘difficult task’ for a team from the continent to win the World Cup.
“It is a huge ask for the African team to win the title, let’s keep our fingers crossed,” he said.
Of the five, Cameroon is drawn in Group A along with hosts Brazil, Croatia and Mexico.
Nigeria will face the challenge of Iran, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Argentina in Group F, while Ivory Coast are clubbed along with Group C with Japan, Greece and Colombia.
Algeria face an uphill task in Group H with Belgium, Russia and Korea Republic , while Ghana which made the quarter finals of last Cup in South Africa will have to beat the challenge of Germany, Portugal and USA in Group G.
The 41-year-old said English Premier League giants Manchester United, currently languishing at the ninth spot and 13 points behind front-runners Arsenal, will bounce back.
“It is a long season ahead and I am certain United will back into the top five. It will not be long that one can keep them down,”he said. Camara was optimistic of his former club Liverpool chances of going on the top.
“I would not say Liverpool has a bad team or not good players and I will not blame the coach. But like all good teams they hopefully will displace Arsenal from the top,” he added about Liverpool which are in second position in the English Premier League.
Camara served as sports minister of Guinea for three years before being replaced in October 2012. The 41-year-old, who also played for West Ham, had a four-month spell as his home country’s national coach. President Alpha Conde appointmenet of Camara made him Guinea’s first ex-sportsman to hold a government post. The Peninsula
