Doha: Diplomatic ties between Qatar and Dominican Republic are set to reach new heights with a number of reciprocal agreements ready to be signed in the future.
A visiting delegation from the Dominican Republic’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs headed by Dr Carlos Gabriel Garcia, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, held the first round of political consultations with their Qatari counterparts chaired by Secretary-General of Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs H E Dr Ahmed bin Hassan Al Hammadi.
“This is the first political consultations between the State of Qatar and the Dominican Republic since we established diplomatic relations in 2000. This visit has the objective of putting the level of relations on documents and agreements during the meeting of foreign ministers of both countries,” Garcia told The Peninsula in an exclusive interview at the Embassy of Dominican Republic yesterday.
During the meeting, the two sides identified several agreements ready to be signed.
“Different reciprocal agreements geared towards the interest of both countries will be signed like on health, cultural cooperation, and investment among other fields. Foreign ministers of both countries will sign the agreements in the next meeting they will have at the United Nations,” he said.
Garcia was upbeat about the current relations that exist between Qatar and Dominican Republic as he stressed “both countries share common interest in different fields.”
Asked which areas of cooperation he wanted further bolstered, the deputy foreign minister mentioned “energy, infrastructure, health and culture.”
The Embassy of Dominican Republic opened in Doha in 2005, while the Embassy of Qatar opened in Santo Domingo in 2007, according to the website of Qatar Embassy in the Dominican Republic.
A memorandum on tourism cooperation, a memorandum of understanding in the field of air services and a memorandum of understanding between Qatar Chamber and Chamber of Commerce and Production of Santo Domingo are among the agreements that were signed in the past, according to the website.
