Doha, Qatar: The second edition of the Ramadan Football Championship, organised by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MECC), kicked off, under the slogan “For a Sustainable Sports Environment.” The championship will continue until March 21, 2025.
The tournament is being held at the Doha University of Science and Technology, with the participation of 12 teams of employees and members of the MECC, divided into two groups, where the teams will play three matches daily during the evening period.
The matches will start at 10pm and end at 12.15 am, and only two matches will be held during the semi-finals and the final. The second edition of the tournament is supported by several leading entities in the field of sustainability.
Director of Public Relations and Communications at the MECC, Farhoud Al Hajri stressed that the championship is not just a sporting event, but rather an integrated platform to spread environmental awareness and promote the concept of sustainable sports, through this initiative that brings together the Ministry’s cadres.
He noted the Ministry’s efforts to inspire young people to adopt responsible behaviours towards the environment, as sports competition merges with environmental awareness in a unique experience.
Al Hajri said that tournament includes qualifying four teams from the participating groups to the tournament finals, noting that on the evening of March 21, the competitions will begin with a match to determine third and fourth place, followed by the coronation match, which will determine the team that wins first place, and the match will also determine the team that will carry the runner-up title in the second edition of the tournament.
He said that the event, which lasted for more than 15 days, would conclude with the crowning of the players and the individual championship titles. Al Hajri noted the MECC is organising some environmental activities accompanying the tournament, which are held on the sidelines of the tournament.
He said that these activities target tournament visitors and their families to establish sustainability practices in society, introducing recycling processes and raising awareness of the importance of preserving and protecting the local environment.
Al Hajri referred to the tournament partners who contributed to the success of the tournament and the achievement of its goals, through building bridges of cooperation with the Ministry.
