Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne met with H E Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kawari, Cultural Adviser at the Emiri Diwan and Qatar's candidate for the director-general post at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) in St. John's yesterday.
The meeting took place during the candidate's visit to Antigua and Barbuda to present his electoral programme under the theme "Towards a New Start for Unesco." The candidate plans to visit several countries including the Caribbean and South American countries, where he will meet with senior officials.
The prime minister expressed his country's support to the Qatari candidate, wishing him success in his endeavours, and voiced the Caribbean countries' trust in Dr Al Kawairi's expertise which qualifies him to succeed in the position. He also conveyed his admiration about Qatar's development and prosperity in all fields, especially in education.
Dr Al Kawairi valued the support of the Caribbean countries which shows the deep relations between those countries and the state of Qatar. He also thanked the prime minister for his warm welcome during his visit, and promised that the region would be of top priority when he is appointed as director general of the Unesco. The candidate also met with Charles "Max" Fernandez, Minster of Foreign Affairs of Antigua and Barbuda and they discussed Dr Al Kawairi's vision which focuses on giving Unesco a new start.
