Stalled promotion common complaint of Qataris

DOHA: Unlike expats who complain mostly about delayed wages, denial of leave and terminal benefits, the grouse of employed Qataris is mainly about stalled promotion.
Absenteeism from work is the main culprit for denial of promotion to complaining Qataris, according to the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.
“Long absence from work is a major cause of stalled promotion of most complainants,” said a senior official. It is because most people are not familiar with work-related regulations.
“They don’t read job manuals so can’t strike a balance between their rights and duties,” said Mohamed Saad Al Miraikhi, Director of Human Resource Development at the ministry.
“Therefore, most complaints we receive from Qatari workers are about not being promoted.”
He, however, didn’t say if that applied to the public and private sectors or only to the former. He said the ministry this year helped 8,269 Qataris get jobs in the state and private sectors. A little more than 50 percent of them were women.
According to Al Miraikhi, more Qatari women are showing interest in joining private companies. “Some 2,000 women landed private jobs in 2012 and 2013.”
Al Miraikhi said in an interview published in Al Sharq yesterday that most responsive among the companies to the ministry’s job nationalisation drive were those in sectors like petroleum, insurance, banking and tourism.
