Doha: Al Duhail blanked Al Rayyan 3-0 while Al Shamal and Al Arabi secured full points after winning their respective matches in Group B during the Ooredoo Cup Round 4 which concluded yesterday.
At Al Egla pitch 4, Michael Olunga (5th and 36th minutes) and Suhaib Gannan (51st minute) scored the goals as Al Duhail cemented their position on top of the group with 10 points.
The Red Knights have won three matches and drawn one game.
Al Rayyan remained on four points after losing their second match. The Lions had won one game and drawn the other.
Al Duhail held an upper hand right throughout the game. After leading at half-time by two goals through tournament top scorer and Kenyan striker Olunga, they continued from where they left off in the second half and added another goal through Gannan.
Meanwhile, at Al Ersal pitch 2, Al Shamal scored an exciting 3-2 win over Al Markhiya in their Round 4 encounter.
This was Al Shamal’s first win of the tournament and came through with goals from Abdulrahman Rashid (36th & 57th minutes) and Mohsin Al Yazidi (90th minute).
For Al Markhiya, Mohammad Al Hassan (60th minute penalty) and Driss Fettouhi (90+4 minute) were the goal scorers.
With both Al Shamal and Al Markhiya eager for a victory, the match produced a lot of thrills with five goals being scored. Two of them came in the dying minutes of the match. Al Shamal went into the break with a 1-0 lead after Abdulrahman Rashid put them ahead with the first of his two goals.
He added to the lead soon on return in the second half, but Al Markhiya rallied and were rewarded with a penalty minutes later. Mohammad Al Hassan made no mistake from the spot to make it 1-2 on the hour mark.
The next 30-odd minutes saw a fierce contest, with both teams trying hard to make a raid. Just at the end of regulation time, Al Yazedi found Al Shamal’s third goal.
With not much time left to play, Al Markhiya still did their best to challenge their rivals and Fettouhi succeeded in scoring to make it 2-3. The final whistle, however, ended their hopes of securing a draw.
The valuable win saw Al Shamal’s points tally increase to four. Al Markhiya remained on one point.
Also yesterday, Al Arabi beat Al Gharafa 1-0 at the Qatar University Pitch 4. The all-important goal was scored by Al Arabi’s Omar Al Somah in the 85th minute of the crucial clash.
The win, their third in the tournament, saw Al Arabi move on to nine points.
Al Gharafa stayed on five points.
