Qatar Museums (QM) unveiled the installation of three major works of art at Qatar University’s campus, in line with QM’s vision, under the guidance of H E Sheikha Mayassa bint Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, its Chairperson, to bring the content of museums and galleries ‘beyond four walls’ to the people of Qatar.
By combining the works of the esteemed local artist Yousuf Ahmed, Lebanon’s Etel Adnan, a recent exhibitor at Mathaf, and Eduardo Chillida (b.1924- d. 2002) an internationally acclaimed sculptor from the Basque region of Spain, QM aims to combine heritage with creativity, and expose a new generation to thought provoking public art.
Installed in prominent locations on Qatar University’s Campus, following consultation with members of the local Qatari student community, the works of art are on view to the general public as well as QU’s student body.
Earlier this year Qatar Museums announced the QRpedia project, a mobile Web based system using QR codes to deliver Wikipedia articles tousers in their preferred language, public will also be able to view information about the public art installations directly on their phones to learn more about the artworks, artists and other public art in Qatar.
Mansoor bin Ebrahim Al Mahmoud, Acting Chief Executive Officer of Qatar Museums, said: “These works of art – from leading artists from Qatar, the Middle East and Europe respectively, signify the latest chapter in Qatar Museums’ vision to bring world class art to the people of Qatar, as they go about their daily lives. The common themes of ‘light’ expressed in the works from three different artists from different cultures, generations and backgrounds, are well suited to a university campus known to foster a culture of intellectual curiosity.” “In initial soundings with local students, the works have already been received positively. We hope current and future generations of students at Qatar University will enjoy them for years to come.”
Prof Sheikha Abdulla Al Misnad, President of Qatar University, said: “We are happy to collaborate with Qatar Museums Authority on the installation of these art pieces on the QU campus. We are lucky to join the many public spaces that have been adorned by similar art masterpieces through QMA’s Public Art project. I hope that having these masterpieces will not only beautify our campus but also inspire local talent and contribute to strengthening the relationship between fine art and society”.The Peninsula
