Hosts Qatar’s women handball team opened their campaign in the fifth GCC Women Games with a deserving 24-11 victory over Bahrain at Aspire Zone in Doha on Tuesday.
Both teams showed impressive performance, but the Qatari side confirmed supremacy to end the match 24-11. In the second match, United Arab Emirates side defeated Oman 23-11.
Earlier the Games, held under the patronage of H E Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, held its opening ceremony on Tuesday at the Khalifa International Tennis Complex.
Around 900 athletes from four Gulf countries, Bahrain, Oman, UAE and hosts Qatar taking part in the event. The championship ends on March 17. The female athletes are competing in 10 games: basketball, handball, table tennis, volleyball, chess, athletics, archery, fencing, taekwondo and bowling.
Senior GCC sport officials and dignitaries including H E Sheikh Saud bin Ali Al Thani, the Vice President of Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), Dr. Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, the QOC Secretary General , Heads of participating teams and board members of Qatar Women Sport Committee.
