Doha: Hamad Bin Khalifa University is hosting an open lecture tomorrow from 7pm to 9pm at its Qatar Faculty of Islamic Studies building. The lecture will look at challenging issues of Fiqh in modern times.
HBKU’s Research Centre for Islamic Legislation and Ethics (CILE) will hold the lecture ‘The Crises of Fiqh in Modern Times: The contemporary interpretation and the future of the Islamic Fiqh schools’.
It is part of a long series of events planned for the current academic year. The lecture will be presented by Dr Moataz Al Khatib, Professor of Religious Pluralism, HBKU.
It will discuss the aspects of the crises of Islamic Fiqh, the contexts of the call for breaking the doctrinal tradition, the paths of interpretation (Ijtihad) and fatwa in contemporary Islam, and the future of the known Islamic Fiqh schools representing Sunni Islam.
Dr Al Khatib will also address contemporary challenges facing doctrinal Fiqh.
The initiative is part of HBKU’s efforts to provide a contemporary research vision in the field of Islamic studies and as part of CILE’s pursuit for renewal in Islamic thinking, brought forward by combining text and context and highlighting the essential role of ethics in the desired reform.
The lecture will be in Arabic, with simultaneous translation in English.
