Al Shamal roads and infrastructure works begin

Doha: The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has started work on developing roads and infrastructure in Al Shamal as part of the Phase 1 project. 

As part of the project there will be a wide range of rehabilitation works for the existing local roads to transform them to bigger and wider roads that will meet the needs of growing population in Al Shamal. 

The project also includes building permanent wider roads and a new sewage network in the area to serve about 3600 business and residential buildings.

Works include building roads connecting all houses in the area and upgrading existing roads, in addition to building roads that lead to all plots of land, where construction has not yet started. 

Roads and Infrastructure Development in Al Shamal project extends from Al Ruwais to Aba Dhelouf, and it is planned to be completed in 2019 with a cost of about QR700m.

As part of the project, 40 km of new internal roads will be built and 80 km of existing roads will be rehabilitated, increasing their capacity. Works will also include installation of three traffic signals and 4,500 lighting poles, and construction of 12 intersections.

Construction works include 28 km of sidewalks and 8,000 car parks, while 1,000 signboards will be installed in the area, enhancing road users and pedestrians’ safety.

Works Ashghal will undertake, on existing roads and new roads it will construct include asphalt works, road markings, pavements, medians, installation of lighting systems and signboards to enhance safety.

Roads and Infrastructure Development project in Al Shamal will widely improve the area, and residents will benefit from the developed, sustainable, safe roads, in addition to eliminating inconvenience caused by maintenance works that used to take place on the deteriorating roads in the area. 

The project will enhance traffic safety through building signal-controlled intersections and speed monitoring systems, which reduce traffic accidents noticeably.

To reduce inconvenience caused by the project works, Ashghal will put a plan to meet all requirements of residents, schools and business owners specifically during this period. Also safety barriers will be put to separate residential and work areas. Dust and noise control works will also take place and Qatar Construction Specifications 2014 will be followed to ensure the highest standards are met in all construction works.
