DOHA: The General Assembly of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) has elected H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani as the new President of QOC, it was announced yesterday.
The decision was confirmed following the annual meeting held at the QOC Headquarters yesterday.
Sheikh Joaan is the sixth QOC President since its foundation in 1979. A key figure in Qatar sports scene, Sheikh Joaan headed the organising committee of the 2015 Men’s World Handball Championships held in Qatar this January.
Sheikh Joaan has a profound interest in horse racing, owning winning entries at Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in the last two seasons. Sheikh Joaan was the Torch Relay Ambassador of the 2006 Asian Games hosted in Doha.
