"Shazam!" tops North American Box Office

Washington:  Warner Bros.' superhero film "Shazam!" took top spot of North American box office with a massive 53.45 million US dollars.

Based on the DC Comics character of the same name, it's the seventh installment in the DC Extended Universe. The film is directed by David F. Sandberg and stars Zachary Levi, Mark Strong, Jack Dylan Grazer, Ross Butler, Michelle Borth and Adam Brody. By shouting out one word "SHAZAM!" a streetwise 14-year-old can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam courtesy of an ancient wizard.

Paramount's horror film "Pet Sematary" opened in second place with an estimated 25 million dollars. Directed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer, the film stars Jason Clarke, John Lithgow, Amy Seimetz, Naomi Frenette, Lucas Lavoie and Alyssa Brooke Levine.

Disney's fantasy adventure film "Dumbo" slipped to third place in second weekend with an estimated 18.22 million dollars, pushing its North America total to 76.3 million dollars. Directed by Tim Burton, the film stars 
Eva Green, Danny DeVito and Michael Keaton.

Horror film "Us" landed in fourth place with an estimated 13.8 million dollars. Written and directed by Jordan Peele, the film stars Lupita Nyong'o, Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Elisabeth Moss, Anna Diop and Winston Duke. 

Disney and Marvel's superheroine film "Captain Marvel" slid to fifth place with an estimated 12.7 million dollars. Directed by Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, the film stars Brie Larson, Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn, Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg. (QNA)
