Doha: The UK Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), in collaboration with the British Embassy in Doha, is running a Youth Sustainability Advocate Mentoring Initiative. This will support young people to learn about and prepare effective evidence-based content on climate and environmental sustainability issues.

The British Ambassador to the State of Qatar, H E Jon Wilks CMG said, “The British Embassy in Doha is proud to celebrate collaboration on Climate Change and Biodiversity preservation between the UK Centre for Environment, CEFAS and the State of Qatar.

On the occasion of Qatar Environment Day, CEFAS launched Marine Litter Education packs in English and Arabic in local schools and a CEFAS-Qatar Youth Sustainability advocate competition. These initiatives support awareness raising for young people in Qatar and contribute to existing evidence-based climate dialogues.

In addition, British Embassy staff and CEFAS attended a beach clean-up with DEAP Qatar and Doha College students in Al Zubarah to take community-based action on marine litter.’

Climate change and environmental degradation are shared global challenges that are already shaping the world. These impacts will grow throughout the 21st century with increasing impact on the health and wellbeing of societies and biodiversity across the world, with the greatest impacts felt by younger and future generations.

Addressing these challenges requires education and engagement across all sections of society. Clear evidence-based communication is a key tool for spreading awareness, and supporting youth engagement on global sustainability issues is essential as today’s youth will shape how the world looks tomorrow.

With the Middle East one of the warmest places on Earth and being adversely affected by Climate Change at an ever-increasing rate, Cefas and the British Embassies in the Middle East are looking for active young social media influencers that would like to work with them on raising awareness of the issues around climate and sustainability.
