DOHA: Al Wakra Hospital has introduced new endoscopy equipment and a dedicated Paediatric Endoscopy Unit.
The new unit has successfully conducted procedures, according to Parwaneh Elias Al Shibani, Director, Nursing,  Medical Division of the hospital.
The hospital received new endoscopy equipment to provide cutting-edge non-surgical services to patients.
The Paediatric Endoscopy Unit, previously at Hamad General Hospital, was transferred to the hospital at the end 2014.
Endoscopy is a non-surgical procedure to examine a person’s digestive tract.
Using an endoscope, a flexible tube with a light and camera attached, the doctor can view pictures of digestive tract on a colour TV monitor.
Endoscopy can be used to investigate an area of the body if symptoms suggest there might be a problem. It can also be used to help perform some types of keyhole surgery (laparoscopy) such as removing the appendix or gallbladder.
“Working with the new equipment will help us achieve excellent outcomes for patients in terms of convenience and the quality of our services. We have received three gastroscopes (to examine the esophagus and stomach), three colonoscopies (to examine the large intestine or colon), and a video processor,” said Dr Abulgasim Ennkaa, Gastroenterology and Hepatology Consultant and Acting Head, Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Unit at the hospital.
Dr Ennkaa said the hospital’s endoscopy service has benefited many patients since its launch.
“Last year, we did 926 endoscopic procedures and the patient flow is increasing as the hospital is expanding and establishing new subspecialities,” he said. The Peninsula
