DOHA: Parents’ high expectations are a major problem faced by adolescents, according to experts.

“Most adolescents’ problems stem from the extraordinary expectations of parents because they want the best from them, the most pious youth and most successful in study,” says Dr Mariam Fedhala, Family Medicine and Adolescent Health Consultant on the occasion of the Gulf Adolescent Health Week.

West Bay Health Centre celebrated the week with activities in cooperation with government and private entities to shed light on the adolescent segment which forms eight to 10 percent of the world’s population to respond to their needs and problems and help them go through childhood to maturity and adulthood.

“These activities are characterised by addressing experiences locally, regionally, and internationally in the area of adolescence and youth health which represent a major stage in life. It is also a sensitive large segment we should care about to avoid health, mental and social problems.

“I hope to see practical contribution of such activities to supporting the adolescent and youth health, and act as a motivation to the community and family throughout positive participation to benefit the community and family and achieve an excellent health level,” Dr Zaleikha Beshwar, Director of West Bay Health Centre, said.

The four-day activities witnessed participation of government and social entities such as Al Aween, Family Consulting Centre, Aspire, the Interior Ministry, Civil Defence Directorate and Juvenile Prosecution.

The centre presented participating partners and government and private corporations with shields and appreciation certificates for cooperation.
