DOHA: The gold market in the Old Al Ghanem area is reported to be earmarked for demolition to pave the way for the upcoming Doha Metro Rail project, and the shops there are to be shifted to Souq Waqif.

A Metro station is planned to be built in the area, jewellery shop operators there said. Officials of the Metro project could not be immediately contacted for comment.

Some jewellery stores in the market said they were not happy with the decision to bulldoze the market and shift all of them to Souq Waqif.

Some store owners said they wondered if there was sufficient space in Souq Waqif to accommodate all the jewellery stores in the gold market.
