DOHA: Qatar, represented by the Ministry of Endowments (Awqaf) and Islamic Affairs, is participating in the 46th King Abdulaziz International Holy Qur’an Competition for Memorisation, Recitation and Interpretation, held at the Grand Mosque in Makkah from August 6 to 19, 2026. The prestigious event brings together an elite group of Qur’an memorisers from countries around the world.
Qatar’s participation reflects the Ministry’s continued efforts to support the Holy Qur’an and its memorisers while strengthening the country’s presence at leading international Qur’anic forums. It also underscores the importance accorded to the Holy Qur’an in Qatari society and contributes to reinforcing Islamic values and authentic cultural identity among younger generations.
The Qatari delegation is headed by Head of the Islamic Network Section at the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Omar Aqla Al Ruwaili. The delegation includes two contestants, each accompanied by their Qur’an instructor, competing in two categories of the competition.
In the third category, dedicated to the memorisation of the entire Holy Qur’an with excellence in recitation and Tajweed, Qatar is represented by Abdulaziz Abdul Rashid Sheikh Ali Sufi, accompanied by his instructor Sheikh Sami Mohammed Salem.
In the fourth category, which focuses on the memorisation of 15 consecutive parts (Juz’) of the Holy Qur’an, Qatar is represented by Mohammed Amjad Tais Abdullah Al Jameeli, accompanied by his instructor Sheikh Mustafa Amin Al Nahmi.
The participation reflects the advanced level of Qur’anic education in Qatar and the Ministry’s sustained educational and training efforts to prepare and qualify Qur’an memorisers to compete at the highest international level.
Head of the Qatari delegation Omar Al Ruwaili said Qatar’s participation in the long-established international competition reflects the state’s ongoing commitment to supporting the Holy Qur’an, caring for its memorisers, and encouraging younger generations to engage with the Qur’an through memorisation, recitation, reflection, and the application of its values and teachings.
He noted that the Ministry consistently supports outstanding Qur’an memorisers by providing them with opportunities to participate in regional and international competitions, helping them refine their skills, gain valuable experience, and strengthen Qatar’s presence in global Qur’anic events.
Al Ruwaili added that the contestants were selected following a comprehensive programme of preparation, training and continuous evaluation. He said the Ministry was keen to ensure Qatar is represented by some of its most accomplished Qur’anic talents, capable of competing with distinction and serving as worthy ambassadors for both the Holy Qur’an and the State of Qatar. He also expressed confidence in their ability to deliver strong performances and achieve commendable results.
