Lawmakers warn against railroading BBL

There will be “grave and serious repercussions” for the country if the passage of the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) will be railroaded, a senior deputy minority leader warned the House Majority yesterday.

“Whether your vote is ‘yes’ or ‘no’ for the BBL, no one should allow a bill, especially one as important as the BBL, to be railroaded. It won’t be to the benefit of Malacañang,” Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Neri Colmenares told reporters during the Minority’s weekly press conference Wednesday.

“For us, the vote can be ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ but as long as it’s not railroaded, it’s ok. But if they railroad that, there will be grave and serious repercussions,” said the solon.

At the Senate, Senator Francis “Chiz” Escudero has urged members of the Senate to comb through each provision of the proposed BBL unmindful of any imposed deadline by the administration to ensure each of its features are constitutionally-compliant. Escudero made the request to Sen. Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., chair of the Senate local government committee, the panel tasked to tackle the controversial measure.
