WASHINGTON: President Barack Obama will travel on Wednesday to a Texas military base to honour the victims of a deadly shooting by a troubled US soldier, the White House said.
Presidential adviser Dan Pfeiffer told CBS television yesterday that president and First Lady Michelle Obama will attend a memorial service at the Fort Hood army base for three soldiers who died last week when Army specialist Ivan Lopez, 34, opened fire at the sprawling military facility.
“The president and the first lady send their thoughts and prayers out to the victims and families and everyone on the base, and they’re going to actually travel down on Wednesday to the memorials they’re running,” Pfeiffer told CBS’s “Face the Nation” programme.
Cuba denounces ‘subversive’ US texting programme
HAVANA: Cuba yesterday slammed a “subversive” US texting application which, like a Twitter-like programme Washington launched here, Havana said aims to foment political unrest.
“Piramideo,” the latest programme to be denounced, “encourages the creation of a network of ‘friends’” state-run newspaper Juventud Rebelde said.
Piramideo users can send one SMS to message all members of their “pyramid” or friend network, said Hilda Arias, director of mobile telephone services for state-run telecommunications firm Etecsa.
But she told the newspaper that the real aim of Piramideo was to “create a sort of communication channel” between opposition groups and dissidents.
