Glasgow: Celtic came within touching distance of clinching the Scottish Premier League with a 3-0 win over Hibernian but James McFadden’s late equaliser for Motherwell against St Mirren stopped the title party at Parkhead.
Yesterday’s win, Celtic’s first over Hibs this season, increases their lead at the top of the table to 15 points over Motherwell with just five games remaining as they inch closer to their second successive league championship.
Kris Commons had fired Celtic ahead in the 14th minute as he showed good skill to collect a Gary Hooper pass and roll it past Ben Williams. The Scotland international made it a double six minutes after the break when he drilled a low shot past the keeper from seven yards out.Mikel Lustig completed the scoring in the 61st minute as he bulleted a header in from close range.
The home fans thought they had a title to toast when Lewis Guy put St Mirren 2-1 ahead in the 75th minute but McFadden’s 84th equaliser for Motherwell meant the champagne was put back on ice until April 20. AFP
