Doha: Qatar University’s College of Law (LAWC) has established the Qatar Branch of the International Law Association (ILA), the prestigious body with branches around the world and a membership of academics and practicing professionals of law. It is the first branch of the association in the Gulf region.
During the branch’s inaugural meeting, officers were elected in accordance with its statute and the ILA Association. Dr Talal Al Emadi will serve as President, while branch founder Dr Adamantia Rachovitsa and Dr Jon Truby will serve as Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer respectively.
Announcing the branch’s establishment, Dr Al Emadi said: “Our aim is to bring together academics, practitioners, governmental agencies, the private sector and members of Qatari society. Focus will be on raising awareness in Qatar of the relevance and importance of international law in international society.”
“Activities will include organising training courses and seminars, and hosting international expert meetings to foster dialogue and research on a national, regional and international level. The branch is an inclusive association.”
Dr Rachovitsa said: “The Qatar branch of the ILA is an exciting opportunity for Qatar and the region. We are looking forward to engaging with legal experts and professionals on the local level and leading new initiatives on the international level”.
The branch plans to organise an international conference on February 25 and 26 to invite international legal experts to discuss the applicability of international law in the Syrian crisis.
