Doha:  Mathaf: Arab Museum of Modern Art has announced the release of the publication M.F. Husain: Horses of the Sun (2020), to be launched during a Mathaf Talk that will be held on 7 October. The volume is the expanded publication of the exhibition of the artist’s work presented at Mathaf in March 2019.

Abdellah Karroum, Director of Mathaf, will introduce the 2019 M.F. Husain: Horses of the Sun exhibition, placing it in the context of Mathaf’s curatorial programme and vision. To be followed by a talk by Ranjit Hoskote, Curator of the exhibition and editor of the volume, where he will touch on Husain’s art and its multiple contexts.

Speaking ahead of the talk Karroum said: “Following the huge success of last year’s exhibition, Mathaf is delighted to launch the extended publication of Husain’s oeuvre. We invite members of the community to attend the launch, which will provide insights into works that spanned more than six decades and depict his strong connection to many parts of the world, including Qatar.”

Maqbool Fida Husain (1913-2011) was a foundational figure in the history of modern Indian art. Born in British India and celebrated as a national artist by an independent India, he saw himself as a global nomad. He was an early example of the transcultural artist, open and responsive to the energies of diverse societies, which nourished his lifelong quest for a space of belonging.

During his last years, Husain explored his ancestral connections with Yemen and eventually made his home in Doha and was honoured with Qatari citizenship. His life and art form a bridge between West Asia and South Asia, as well as between modernity and the deep histories of a transcontinental swathe extending from Morocco and Mali to Central Asia and Indonesia.

The launch of M.F. Husain: Horses of the Sun will be held from 4:00 pm – 5:15 pm on Wednesday, October 7. The event will be in English with simultaneous Arabic translation. To register to attend, please visit:
