Doha: The State of Qatar has expressed great satisfaction at reaching an agreement between the Transitional Military Council and the Forces of the Declaration of Freedom and Change in the brotherly Sudan.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed the State of Qatar’s welcome for the formation of a three-year sovereign council and the formation of a civilian government of competencies, which Qatar hopes would ensure real representation of the Sudanese people in their various directions in addition to the continued functioning of the state organs.
The role played by the African Union in bridging the gap between the parties in the Sudanese scene was pivotal. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar commends these constructive efforts and expresses its deep gratitude and appreciation to the African Union, the statement added.
Sudan’s ruling military council and a coalition of opposition and protest groups have agreed to share power for three years and then hold elections. The first 21 months will be led by the military and the final 18 months by civilians. The sovereign council would include five military figures and five civilians, with an additional civilian member agreed by the two sides, and that the deal would be finalised by Monday.
The Ministry said Qatar hopes the agreement would realise the aspirations of the brotherly Sudanese people and their just demands for freedom, peace and justice, stressing the firm position of Qatar in support of the unity, stability and sovereignty of Sudan.
Meanwhile, the Arab League also expressed admiration of the settlement worked out between the transitional Sudanese military council and the forces of freedom on forming a ruling council and a government of technocrats.
The Arab League Secretary General, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, expressed in a statement appreciation for the positive and constructive spirit, demonstrated by the council, leaders of the forces of change, the other political and civil movements.
Such a spirit has led to the consensus among the Sudanese, he said, expressing confidence that they would be able to pursue the process for transfer to democracy.
