Doha: The construction of Al Wakrah Stadium has boosted the Qatari economy, with more than 50 percent of the project budget spent locally.

A number of Qatari firms have been directly involved in the construction of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 stadium, which will be inaugurated on May 16 when it hosts the 2019 Amir Cup final.

The main contractor for Al Wakrah Stadium was a joint venture between two Qatari companies—Midmac and PORR Qatar—plus Belgian firm Sixco.

Midmac has been involved in a vast range of major infrastructure projects since being established in Qatar in the 1960s. The company has also contributed to the development of numerous Qatar 2022 stadiums, including Khalifa International Stadium, which was inaugurated following a successful redevelopment in 2017, and Education City Stadium, which is in the final stages of construction.

PORR Qatar, a subsidiary of Austrian company PORR, has been operational in Doha since 2011. In addition to working on Al Wakrah Stadium, the company is involved in the tunnelling and railway construction of the Green Line of Doha Metro. Engineering specialists Coastal Qatar manufactured the seats for Al Wakrah Stadium at their state-of-the-art factory in Doha – a facility capable of producing 500 seats a day.

Coastal Qatar will also produce the seats for Al Bayt Stadium – Al Khor City and Al Rayyan Stadium. Coastal Qatar was established in the 1970s and delivers a range of engineering, galvanising, steel and manufacturing projects for projects in Qatar and overseas. It has partners across Europe and the United States. The company has worked on a number of key projects locally, including for clients such as Hamad International Airport, Qatar Foundation, Ashghal, Aspire Logistics and Qatar Olympic Committee.

SOLB26 has produced the structural steel for Al Wakrah Stadium. The company has also contributed to the development of Al Bayt Stadium – Al Khor City. Past projects include Qatar National Library, Sidra Medical & Research Centre and Al Shaqab Equestrian Academy.
