ISTANBUL: The Tripoli-based National Salvation government announced on Tuesday that it was stepping down in order to save Libya from “bloodshed and division”.The announcement came a few hours after Martin Kobler, the UN envoy to the country, arrived in Tripoli. On Friday, the European Parliament imposed sanctions against Libyan officials Khalifa Ghweil, head of the National Salvation government, Agilah Saleh, head of the Tobruk House of Representatives and Nuri Abu Sahmain, head of the General National Congress in Tripoli, for allegedly standing against a political solution in Libya. On Dec. 17, 2015, delegations from both governments, as well as other officials, signed a deal to establish a unity government headed by Fayez Serraj. In February, the unity government and a presidential council were formed according to the UN-sponsored plan to end the chaos that has gripped the country since 2011.
