Qatar attends 5th UN Environment Assembly

Doha: The State of Qatar took part in the meetings of the 5th session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 5.2 in-person session), and in the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme, in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change H E Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali Al Thani chaired the delegation of the State of Qatar to the meetings and the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the UN Environment Programme, headquartered in Nairobi.

On the sidelines of the 5th session of the UN Environment Assembly, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change met with Assistant to the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran and Head of the Iranian Department of Environment Ali Salajegheh, and a number of Their Excellencies the ministers concerned with environment affairs and climate change in the member states of the UN Environment Programme. The meetings discussed means of partnership and cooperation between the State of Qatar and the ministers’ countries in the environmental fields.

Minister of Environment and Climate Change Sheikh Dr. Faleh bin Nasser bin Ahmed bin Ali Al Thani also met with Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme Inger Andersen, and discussed Qatar’s priorities and environmental strategy, in addition to joint projects with the UN Programme.

The Minister participated in the meeting of the Arab ministers responsible for environmental affairs, on the sidelines of the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme.

Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Republic of Nairobi H E Jabor Ali Al Dosari delivered the speech of the State of Qatar in the celebration, praising the accomplishments of the UN Environment Programme over the past five decades, and its efforts in persevering and sustaining the environment, and facing the environmental challenges at all levels. He looked forward to more achievements that would promote the environmental management at the global level.

The Ambassador highlighted the recently launched Qatar National Environment and Climate Change Strategy, in addition to Qatar National Climate Change Action Plan, which will chart the next chapter of Qatar’s environmental journey and its aspirations for sustainable development projects and the achievement of the country’s goals in preserving the environment and promoting green growth by 2030.

He noted that the State of Qatar has been seeking to lay solid foundations for joint cooperation, and to play an active role at the international level, which would embody the principles of cooperation in the process of global environmental action, guided in this approach by its National Vision 2030, which constitutes the main base of its development strategies, noting that the State has been keen on making environmental development one of the National Vision’s pillars and priorities.

The Ambassador underlined that the State of Qatar, based on its belief in the shared responsibility to achieve environmental sustainability, will continue to implement all its commitments and support all regional and international endeavours to combat the dangers and challenges facing the environment.

He added that the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme constitutes an opportunity to highlight the programme’s achievements over the past decades. The programme has spared no effort to establish tools, mechanisms and agreements that would achieve the endeavours aimed at reaching a sustainable future, in which the dimensions of environmental development are in harmony with the contexts of social, economic and human development. In this context, HE the Ambassador highlighted the strong relations that unite the State of Qatar with the United Nations Environment Programme in various areas related to environmental affairs.
