Doha: Lulu Group Qatar has won a prestigious Tarsheed Award for Sustainability and Energy Efficiency at the 10th anniversary celebration of the National Programme for Conservation and Energy Efficiency (Tarsheed) run by Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa).

Prime Minister and Minister of Interior H E Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani presented ‘Tarsheed Award for Sustainability and Energy Efficiency in the Commercial Sector’ to Director of Lulu Group International Dr. Mohamed Althaf during the ceremony held under the theme “Towards Sustainability and Energy Efficiency” at Sheraton Hotel.

The Tarsheed awards scheme celebrates exceptional companies and institutions in Qatar who achieve the targeted water and electricity consumption in an effort to preserve environment and country’s natural resources. 

Lulu Group received the award in the category, “Tarsheed Conserving Building Competition” for its excellence in the respective field, being only private sector business in Qatar to achieve the targeted reduction of electricity and water consumption.

“We, Lulu Group, are very proud of winning this prestigious award which shows our commitment and dedication to reduce electricity and water consumption throughout our business operation chain. It was very impressive and special moment for me to receive this award from Prime Minister and Minister of Interior H E Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al Thani,” said Director of Lulu Group International Dr. Mohamed Althaf.

He said that Lulu Group adopted a slew of smart technologies throughout its facilities which helped greatly in reducing electricity and water consumption.

“We also introduced best scientific practices and training, rigorous monitoring and audit by third party organizations like The Gulf Organization for Research & Development (GORD) to ensure the sustainability. The award is recognition of our commitment to the Circular Economy,” said Dr. Althaf.

He said Tarsheed award is a culmination of Lulu Group’s accelerated efforts to reduce carbon emission to 50 percent by 2030 and to achieve net-zero carbon footprints by 2045 in line with Qatar’s commitment to reduce carbon emission for climate change.

A leading retailer exercising sustainable best practices, Lulu paved the way in its commitment to sustainability by taking real and demonstrable measures to protect the environment and contribute to reducing carbon emissions and food waste

“Lulu Group has framed its own strategy on sustainability, which is put into practice in all its retail units and supply chains worldwide. Lulu is deeply committed to reducing its impact on the environment and taking real and lasting steps to ensure this. As part of our commitment to Qatar National Vision 2030, we have been actively working to reduce carbon emissions, reduce food waste, and promote healthy eating,” said Dr. Althaf.

Some of the sustainable best practices implemented by the Lulu team are GSAS- Op Certification. Lulu Hypermarket in Qatar has become one of the first retailers in MENA to achieve sustainable operations certification under the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) from the Gulf Organisation for Research & Development (GORD).

Building Management System (BMS) has been installed for building to efficiently manage the assets associated with the building ventilation and lighting.
Cloud Energy Optimization System-Honey well forge has been installed to efficiently manage and optimise the energy used during the operations. Use of LED are being encouraged for the upcoming projects and existing projects being gradually shifted to LED from conventional lights.

Light Control System assisted with motion sensors are being considered to optimise the use of energy especially in the warehouse operations.
